Bloodline - Breeders term that alludes to pedigree
Bred female - A pregnant Alpaca
Carding - The final cleaning process, accomplished by either hand or machine, through which Alpaca
fiber goes before spinning
Cria - A baby Alpaca, usually younger than 5 months
Crimp - The regular undulation along the length of an individual fiber or lock of fiber. A higher number
of crimps per inch can indicate a finer fiber
Dam - An Alpacas mother
Fiber - The fleece of an Alpaca
Fineness - A measure, in microns, of the diameter of individual fibers. Most often expressed as an
average for a representative sample of fiber
Fleece Weight - The weight of an entire fleece measured at the same time each season
Guard Hair - Also kemp. Coarse Medulated fiber. A second coat of fiber found in llamas, vicuna,
guanacos and to a lesser degree, Alpacas
Huacaya - (wa-kai-a) A type of Alpaca with fine fiber and a woolly appearance
Fiber quality male - A male Alpaca whose genetic characteristics are not worthy of breeding
Herdsire - A male Alpaca with the genetic characteristics for breeding
Histogram - The histogram is a graphic representation of the distribution of the mechanical
measurement of an Alpaca fiber. The histogram displays the distribution of the number of sample fibers
according to the fiber diameter (micron count) and the statistical frequency within that micron count.
Plotted on a standard graph base with the number of fibers along the left axis and the micron count
along the base axis, the evaluator can immediately gain a distinct interpretation of the fleece sample
from the graphic representation
Macho - Male Alpaca used in a breeding program
Mating - The process that determines which selected males are bred to which selected females
Pedigree - A recorded list or genealogy of an Alpacas ancestors. A registered or recorded known line
of descent
Staple Length - The length of a lock of shorn Alpaca fleece
Staple - A group or clusters of individual fibers. A large number of staples constitute a fleece.
Suri - (sur-ry) A type of Alpaca with tightly wound fiber that looks like dreadlocks
Weanling - A weaned Alpaca, younger than 1 year
Yearling - An Alpaca between 1 and 2 years old
